good start!

The flight was really good, although I could have started vertically: I recognised from the air “Triavium” and “the Goffertstadium”. I flew straight over my home town Nijmegen! Soon we flew over the magnificent Alps. Not much snow this time of year and you could see incredibly far. When we approached the Adriatic sea clouds came in between the high peaks at aprox. 2000 meter which made for fantastic views. The clouds seemed like a sea: Halong Bay in Europe! Along the long coastline of Italy the flight continued and soon we reached the Sahara: we flew at least three ours over sand, sand and even more sand. Altough nice I treated myself for some inflight entertainment. The tv in front of me had an overwhelming choice of movies and TV-series, what a luxury. I felt like being in a very fast moving cinema with spectacular views besides the screen, options for changing the movie and free drinks and food, you can’t ask for more. When eating a piece of pie I suddenly bit in something firm, a little piece of iron. I wanted to throw it away but my neighbour told me to show it to the cabin personnel. When confronted with this very little piece they where quite shocked and apologized a lot. For compensation I got a goody bag which is normally given to business-class travellers. The bag contained a “KLM house”. This appeared to be a KLM tradition: every year KLM gives out another miniature house and I got number 91, saying KLM now exists for 91 years. It doesn’t harm to know. The personell was very friendely.

Close to Moshi the landscape changed from sand to more green bushes. The sun went down which gave me an “African feeling”: dark red skies, beautiful.

Once at the airport I needed to buy a visum and I told I came for work in stead of holiday (you need this because they can check on you while working and then you need the working visa). I was taken to another counter and the friendly guy at the desk took his webcam and took a picture from me, all very funny. When I left the airport I saw an enormous crowd with signs for the arriving people. I spotted Thomas with his sign for me and soon we left for Moshi! Thomas had put me in a nice hotel because the guesthouse at the office has just two rooms and was used to put Kennedy and Hilda in. They both come from Viafrica in Kenia to join my little Linux class.

When we enterd Moshi Thomas noticed there was no power in the city: welcome to Africa. At the hotel Thomas managed to get somene to open the door for us. The guy put on the hotel generator so I could see the room, what a service. I dumped my bags and we went to meet up with Erwin, he was sitting on a terrace with 3 friends at a bar. First we sat in the dark but soon the power worked again. It’s nice to have a good cold beer after the flight! The local beer is “Kilimanjaro”. In holland you can buy the fair trade beer (“Mgozo”) which is not available here. The 3 people were a Kenian girl and two german girls who worked and lived in Moshi. Soon we left for the bar “galaxy”, 10 minutes by car further up the road. A big nice place to order another “Kili”. But it was a bit guiet so we left, again by car, for “La Liga”: a huge discotheque full of very good music and packed with people. We don’t have something like that in Nijmegen. After another “Kili” my feet started to move and I stayed dancing into the little hours. At the end I dropped into a massive sleep in my hotel. It was a good day with very nice people.

Everything has his price though. After a deep sleep I’m still a bit recovering from the “Kili night” with a good english breakfast at the hotel. Just typing this text in the shades outside. Life is great at the moment! Today plans are I Hook up with Erwin and discuss the plans for the coming days.

Till later!
